The Bold Italic is a weekly online magazine with a unique mission: to help people become better locals—equipping their members with rare neighborhood intel, backstory and potential adventures.
Gannett, the largest publisher of printed newspapers in the USA, worked directly with global design firm IDEO in developing the concept as well as the design for a new kind of online media site. Working directly with the client and IDEO team, we led a corporate identity program built to compliment the philosophy of this new media offering. The result, a hand-hewn script, was the result of a greater exploration of 60+ identity concepts, and means to communicate the more personal nature of this site compared to its competitors.
Being a site that is truly “alive”, artwork and articles change weekly, sometimes daily. The masthead needs to be flexible enough to work on multiple backgrounds and color fields.
